Covington County Goes Meatless

October 1st, 2009

Meatless Monday is popping up on campuses, in hospitals, and in additional school districts around the country. In September of 2009, Covington County’s 8 schools started Meatless Monday in their cafeterias. The initiative was a directive of the Northern Kentucky Healthy Monday coalition (www.healthymondaynky.org) a broader health promotion campaign whose mission is to enhance healthy living awareness and opportunities in Northern Kentucky through Healthy Monday messaging.

The nutrition director of Covington County school system instituted Meatless Mondays for the entire district as a cheaper, healthier option for students. Students are offered entrees like low fat grilled cheese on whole wheat bread, meatless chef’s salad, and whole wheat cheese pizza every Monday. The schools are embracing a comprehensive wellness approach. And so, the county’s 5 elementary schools, middle school, high school, and alternative high school receive a Healthy Monday tip every week with their morning announcements, and a reminder to walk the Monday mile which has been mapped for each school, indoors and out!

The Northern Kentucky Healthy Monday Coalition is the first community Healthy Monday program which embraces all of the Monday campaigns. According to their website, the coalition aims to "enhance healthy living awareness and opportunities in Northern Kentucky through Healthy Monday messaging.’
