Meatless Monday found itself at the center of an unexpected firestorm when the USDA made –and quickly retracted- the recommendation that staff go meatless one day a week in an interoffice newsletter. Since then, the controversy has been featured in dozens of publications, radio programs and TV features including CNN, NPR, The Washington Post, Slate, ABC, and Mark Bittman‘s column in The New York Times.
The campaign even had the honor of being lampooned by Steven Colbert on his late-night political talk show, The Colbert Report. Colbert uses a clip of Fox News’ coverage of the campaign to poke fun at the controversy, asking “if I have Meatless Mondays, how am I supposed to celebrate Trichinosis Tuesdays?”
