Declare your Independence this Monday

July 4th is synonymous with American pride; the day we don our red white and blue, fire up the grill and enjoy the best summer has to offer. For most of us Independence Day tradition also means a hamburger or hotdog (or maybe both). “Like every day in America,” notes NY Times columnist Mark Bittman, “the Fourth of July is a celebration of protein… a day with contests to see who can eat the most hot dogs, not the most veggie patties. If you’re anti-meat, the Fourth of July can feel anti-you.” Thankfully, you don’t have to stack the BBQ with meat to feel patriotic this Monday! July 4th is the perfect time to celebrate Meatless Monday’s historic beginnings and to introduce delicious veggie options to your friends and family.

Though launched as a public health campaign in 2003, Meatless Mondays began in WWI, when citizens were asked to cut back to help feed troops and civilians overseas. The campaign returned in WWII and is now being used not only to encourage healthier eating, but as a reminder to consider the impact our diet has on the land and natural resources. Sharing the movement this Monday is an excellent way to start a new, healthier tradition that everyone can enjoy.

Best of all, veggie options are an excellent way to break up BBQ monotony and impress guests with an unforgettable menu! Meatless grilling is not only exciting and flavorful, but it can be every bit as easy and satisfying as the cookout fare you’re used to.
