The Johns Hopkins Hospital Café Goes Meatless Monday

Since the beginning, Meatless Monday has been a campaign rooted in public health. Our academic partner, The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, has served as our scientific backer since our inception in 2003. On April 12th, Johns Hopkins further touted the benefits of going meatless on Monday by bringing the campaign to their hospital cafeteria. The Monday movement at The Johns Hopkins Hospital ensures that staff and visitors alike will have access to healthy, meatless options.

Meatless Monday at The Johns Hopkins Hospital takes place in the Wellness Corner of the Cobblestone Café, the hospital’s main cafeteria. The café serves about 1,800 customers daily and includes a variety of vendors. Starting on April 12th, dietitians will be on hand each Monday to answer customer questions and highlight the health benefits of meatless meals. Executive Chef Shawn Fields hopes the lunch crowd will come to the Wellness Corner and sample his favorite Monday dish- hearty vegetarian chili.

The first Meatless Monday at The Johns Hopkins Hospital was praised for bringing attention to the connection between meat and chronic disease. Leo Dorsey, the director of food services at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, notes that “Meatless Monday provides a healthy and tasty alternative for people looking for healthy diet change’. We wish Johns Hopkins continued success with their Meatless Monday initiative! Hopefully there example will encourage hospitals nationwide to take the pledge and make Mondays meatless.
