Meatless Monday Makes Supermarket News

Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market of San Francisco and Los Angeles kicked off 2013 with three short videos as part of its regular weekly Easy Meal series that offers the basic steps and ingredients needed to complete high-protein, meat-free meals.

According to Brendan Wonnacott, spokesperson for El Segundo’s Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market chain, The Meatless Monday push in January was all about timing. “…everybody wants to be healthier (in the new year.)”

Retailers are supporting the movement because they recognize the Meatless Monday movement is increasing in awareness and their customers are demanding it. By sharing meal ideas on social media and hosting in-store events and cooking classes, retailers provide opportunities to introduce their high-quality products and how to cook them. It’s a win-win opportunity for supermarkets and the customer.

A March 2012 NPR-Truven Health Analytics Health Poll listed health as the No. 1 reason Americans cut back on meat. With this health trend to cut back on meat growing, Meatless Monday may just crack through the retail ceiling and become a staple in grocery stores across the U.S.
