There has been tremendous growth in the global Meatless Monday movement over the past few years: the campaign is now active in 21 countries around the world and gains momentum every week. We owe this success to local organizers who are passionate about bringing personal and planetary health to their communities. One such Meatless Monday crusader is Jonas Paulsson, founder of “Köttfri Måndag” and spokesman for the group Climate Action. Paulsson’s hard work and dedication is now being recognized by the World Wildlife Fund: he is one of 10 nominees for this year’s Environmental Hero Award.

The 2011 Environmental Hero Award nominees were selected by a panel of Swedish sustainability leaders and include some of the country’s must inspiring eco activists. Through his work with Köttfri Måndag, Jonas Paulsson “may be the person who has done the most in the past year to create debate and inform the (Swedish) public about the link between meat production and climate change”. He has worked to bring the campaign to schools, municipalities and other establishments, including the Nordic Light Hotel in Stockholm.
The award will be decided by a WWF jury, but it is possible to vote for the 2011 reader’s choice winner!
