Food prices expected to continue rising in 2012. Protect your wallet with Meatless Monday.
Prices for all food climbed more than 4 percent in 2011, according to the latest forecast on the Consumer Price Index produced by the U.S.D.A. Economic Research Service. But the price of meat rose even more –as much as 10 percent. Pork and poultry prices have also gone up over the last 12 months.
Many savvy shoppers are cutting back on meat to protect their wallets. An online poll of more than 1200 consumers conducted by the American Meat Institute found that 46% of budget-conscious shoppers are making more meatless meals in order to save money. Another 57% are cooking more casseroles and pasta dishes as a way to stretch their meat dollar.
In an interview with the money management site mint.com, Massachusetts-based dietitian Chrissy Carroll, RD agreed that cutting back on certain types of meat can not only save a buck or two, but may also help you reduce your intake of artery-clogging saturated fat.
