It’s no secret that countries around the globe are embracing Meatless Monday: from Sweden’s award-winning Köttfri Måndag initiative to the government-supported Luntiang Lunes campaign in the Philippines, non-profits, restaurants, schools and citizens are coming together to cut meat consumption worldwide. In the past two months, the movement has grown even further! Both Israel and Australia have called on local organizations, health experts, media and celebrities to support Meatless Monday and help improve the health of their countries.
Meatless Monday Israel was launched by Miki Haimovich, a well-known news anchor who has shifted her focus from television to the nation’s wellbeing. Her efforts have gained the support of major health institutions like Bnei Zion Hospital, the Israeli Dieticians Society, and the Israeli Cardiology Foundation. Dozens of restaurants in the city of Tel Aviv and ISS Israel – the country’s largest catering service- are also on board, showing citizens how delicious Meatless Monday meals can be! Israelis can learn more about local events, swap recipes and follow the movement by visiting the campaign’s website or following them on Facebook.
In Australia, Meatless Monday has gained the support of famous chefs, TV personalities, nutritionists and business moguls. “I love eating meat, but I love our planet even more, so I will join this campaign and stop eating meat at least one day a week” said Virgin Group Founder and Chairman Sir Richard Branson. Australia’s initiative was started by the non-profit Do Something in collaboration with the Fry’s Family Foundation with research by the University of Technology Sydney’s Institute of Sustainable Futures. They also have a website and Facebook page account where Aussies can get the latest meatless news and meal ideas.
